Seasonal Tip from Dr. Lavender – I am encouraged and thankful for the lavender enthusiasts and those that want to improve or make a statement with their lavender landscapes for accessing my FREE Lavender Owner’s Manual.  Over 1800 copies have been distributed.  Obtain yours at our SequimLavenderFestival.com website.

By mid-April lavender plants should be showing some life with stems exhibiting waxy green leaves.  Browning of woody stems, sectioned off like slices of pie, should alert you to several conditions – 1) that area of the plant was damaged by extreme low temperatures, wind, snow or ice during the winter, 2) an animal trampled or urinated on it, 3) hand or mechanical cultivation (rototillers, string trimmers) cut or bruised the plant, 4) the soil is soggy, too compact/tight and does not drain or aerate well, 5) a nearby application of weed killer struck the plant, or 6) root disease.  Treatments – 1) Remove the damaged plant material and wait-and-see for new growth, 2) Remove and replant a plant in a dissimilar area for assurance or 3) Abandon lavender as a suitable plant.

My discussion with horticulture experts and botanists mention poor planting conditions as the “root cause” of lavender plant failure.  It may take 2-3 growing seasons before you learn from the lavender plant that you planted it in the wrong growing location.  Diseases affecting lavender should be negligible concerns.  In any situation, don’t make the same mistake twice.  As stated over and over in the Lavender Owner’s Manual – 1) Well drained soil, 2) Five-seven hours of sunlight per day during the growing season and 3) Halloween Haircut, always leaving 2-3 inches of green growth on the plant, are critical rules to follow with Pacific Northwest lavender.

Annually, during the 3rd full weekend in July SLGA members celebrate their harvest with its U-Pick, U-Tour and U-Free Admission Sequim Lavender Festival®. This years dates are July 20, 21 & 22, 2012.

The Lavender Capital of North America, founded by the members of the Sequim Lavender Growers Association, is the WEEKEND DESTINATION for you, your friends, and pets to the original and #1 lavender festival event in Sequim, Washington and the surrounding rural Sequim Dungeness Vally.

This three-day weekend in mid-July is the beginning of the lavender harvest seson.  There is nothing like it anywhere to stimulate the senses and imagination with the fragrance and presence of lavender in the field.

This lavender themed-event consists of a high end juried street fair consisting of all forms of art techniques, photography, pottery, metalwork, leatherwork, carvings, jewelry, fibers and precious minerals and rocks. There is nothing lacking for the discerning appetite, vegan or hot dog lover at our food court and beer and wine garden with signature offerings.  We’ll serve BBQ, lavender ice cream, oysters and salmon, pizza, Greek food and Thai. These foodies were selected to be part of our festival for their menus, customer satisfaction and friendliness to all of our visitors.  All of this is surrounded by continuous live music from Northwest bands and ensembles.

Popular lavender farms that make this FREE event possible will be open for your imagination and enjoyment. Gifts and personal care items for people and pets and, of course, lavender in all of its features and forms will be available for purchase. PETS ARE PEOPLE ALSO.  ALL PEOPLE ARE WELCOME WHO ARE HYDRATED AND POLITE!  Tree lined seating areas, hard flat walking surfaces, umbrellas, tents and spacious lawns will maximize your comfort.  Easy curbside drop-offs for wheelchairs, passengers, children, mushers and backpack-laden familes will be specially provided.  Convenient FREE parking and FREE shuttle service to & from the Lavender Festival Street Fair will be provided at the QFC and JCPenney parking lots.
